The Future of Energy
Team of leading low carbon energy professionals with global experience
The Oil & Gas sector faces an existential threat from energy transition BUT the companies within it have the reach, scale and skills to lead energy transition and turn it from a threat into a business opportunity.
The team at BluEnergy uniquely combines extensive low carbon experience with decades in the oil & gas industry - the ideal support as your company navigates its journey through the energy transition.

“Energy Transition is about mind set not skill set”
(Hamish Wilson, CEO, April 2021)
Identify opportunities to align your business with customer & host government Net Zero targets
Make your Energy Transition a journey to value accretive opportunities, not “green-wash” and a compliance cost
BluEnergy will look to identify and progress low-carbon opportunities that leverage your existing asset base and operational footprint and can build on your existing skill base
Want action not words?
BluEnergy is not a big name consultancy offering endless strategy refreshes and re-organisation. We are practitioners with a strong bias for action. We can help translate strategic objectives into actionable plans and work with clients to identify the right net zero journey for them.
There are a myriad of opportunities opening up for the decarbonisation of Industrial clusters using Carbon Capture, Use and Storage (CCUS), Blue Hydrogen, Green Hydrogen, as well as pure green electricity plays. We understand the key components of successful low-carbon “eco-systems” and guide clients through the right opportunities for them as well as how to access them.
Recent Projects
Advised E&P Company on UK Energy Transition Strategy
Provided detailed technical and commercial oversight and introduction to low carbon and de-carbonisation opportunities in the UK for a UKCS E&P operator. Assisted in the development of an actionable strategy including access strategy and tactics into various opportunities.
Major re-direction of global energy services company strategy
Undertook a detailed analysis of this company’s right to play in the new Energy Transition eco-systems, and identified the key value pools as well as how that company could succeed in the new environment.
CCUS Projects
Involved in wide range of UK and International CCUS and Geological Storage Projects as expert in project development, advisory or reviewer roles for Oil and Gas Industry, Governments or Multilateral banks. Specific projects and storage opportunities including UK, USA, China, Indonesia, Australia and Algeria.
CO2 Geological Storage Regulation and Best Practice
Lead author of European Guidance Documents on Geological CO2 Storage covering Life Cycle Risk Assessment, Storage Monitoring and Verification and Corrective Measures. These establish the regulatory framework and guidance for geological storage in Europe.— Quote Source
CCUS Policy and Commercialisation
Coordinated CCS Commercialisation Working Group for consortium of 13 international Oil and Gas companies. Input and active role in workstreams on CCUS Policy options, Value, Kickstarter Hub initiative and Country White papers.
CO2 Storage Risk
Led assessment on quantification of potential leakage from geological storage and potential liabilities for UK Government. Produced evidence-based assessment of potential leakage risks to demonstrate that these are manageable, very low probability and limited in scale.
Low Carbon Energy and Emissions Landscape
Drafting and input on the on Low Carbon Energy and Emissions landscape for US Oil and Gas industry National Petroleum Council report to help frame the context and rationale for CCUS in USA.
China CCUS
Instigated and took lead role in intergovernmental UK/China collaborative project on Near-Zero Emissions Coal use in China (NZEC). Identified potential of CCUS for reducing emissions from coal use in China and helped to catalyse activity on CCUS.
Energy Efficiency
Developed CHP projects in the UK, one of which proceeded to construction, one was swapped for a low-price long-term power supply and several were sold for final development by a Nordic operator.
Green Projects and Trading
Modelled and managed green certificate trading during European market infancy, including cross-border trading. Risk-managed a portfolio of green power and biofuels in Netherlands. Modelled, priced and purchased power from a large Belgian Wind Power project, and hedged in the market.
Risk Frameworks
Developed and deployed comprehensive risk frameworks for a range of operating companies, including risk policy, governance, the enablement process and risk limits:
· Energy Trading (US companies)
· Power Generation (Dutch)
· Industrial Starch and Polyols (French and multi-national)
· Agricultural Trading (Dutch, German, US and multi-national)
Transformation
Built coherent plans for a major oil company in Nigeria to effectively utilise gas production, avoid flaring and provide onshore power. Co-developed a Master Plan including logistics, local staffing, and EHS systems. Plans were executed.
Transformation
Re-structured a major old Dutch power generator, including splitting the business into producing assets and risk-carrying entities. Modelled and hedged legacy contracts with open commodity market instruments. Enabled the various trading desks to operate safely within a tight risk framework.
Transformation
Facilitated the development and expansion of the traded Dutch gas market. This was mainly by stakeholder engagement and persuasion, but included acquisition of complementary trading platforms.
Carbon Utilisation
Developed strategy and technology review for carbon utilisation processes (carbonation) for application to industrial energy processes leading to economic evaluation of ‘negative emission’ opportunities
Hydrogen
Led the development of a hydrogen network collaboration programme leading to the formation of a regional industry group lobbying for government funding for the development of a hydrogen market as part of the UK industrial cluster proposition
Hydrogen
Tony Smith works as an advisor to expert groups developing market justification for hydrogen as part of industrial sector decarbonisation. This includes work on market design for hydrogen
Domestic Heat and Electricity
Founded and ran a technology start up providing an innovative space heating concept integrating PV/solar thermal with a heat pump and energy storage (thermal and batteries). This involved forming a delivery team and raising capital. The technology went through several iterations responding to the market and performance data. The project gave a deep understanding of the European renewable energy market and the challenges of using technology to replace fossil fuel heat and electricity and a broad knowledge of both the range of renewable energy technologies and business models for their deployment. Interfacing and influencing government policy has been an important element of the project.
Solar, batteries and car chargers
Re-invigorated a domestic solar company which is now providing roof top and ground mount solar, batteries and car chargers. In addition, the company also provides feasibility studies and O&M services for utility scale solar farms.
Understanding the economics of solar and batteries underpins the product offering; integral to this is using batteries and energy storage to take advantage of variable electricity tariffs and maximising onsite usage of renewable energy.
Solar thermal and borehole integration
Won a BEIS (UK Government) funded project to halve the operating and capital costs of a heat pump system. The project started with building a parametric model of underlying physics for both solar thermal and ground heat sources for the heat pump. On the basis of the insights gained from this modelling, the technology was re-designed to use bore holes as a thermal storage solution.
